A- Companies that manufacture Nikon D3200 lenses:
Nikon lenses come in the first place (Also known as Nikkor), their lenses are high quality, but expensive; Then comes the lenses made by Tokina, Sigma, and finally Tamron (in that order ).
B- Zoom lenses and the Zooming ability:
In photography, by “zoom” we mean: get closer to your subjects, without moving toward them, Or in other words: "Bring far subjects close to you". So this happens only in a zoom lens, and by Zoom lens we mean "lenses that have a range of focal length from A to B", In other words: "their focal length varies (ex: 18-55mm)".
Note:
Lenses that have only one focal length (ex: 35mm) called "Prime Lenses" and they Can't Zoom.
To make smooth automatic zooming, you need an in-built focus motor, it can be placed in the body of the camera, or in the body of the lens; And wherever you put this small motor, the body that contains it becomes a little expensive.
in case of Nikon D3200, the body doesn't contain an in-built focus motor, that's why it comes with a low price, So for making automatic zooming, you need a "Nikon zoom lens" that contains this motor inside it, Nikon Calls them "Af-S Lenses", while Nikon lenses without inbuilt focus motor called "AF lenses".
- Tokina: lenses with in-built focus motor called DXII also DX2, and lenses that don't have this motor called just DX.
- Sigma calls motorized lenses: HSM.
- Tamron AF/MF (mean the lens support Autofocus/Manual Focus).
- While each other brand has its own designations (i list here just the Top Brands).
Summary:
Always buy a lens that contains an inbuilt focus motor for Nikon D3200.

C- Nikon Lenses format, DX vs FX mouth:
Nikon made two types of lenses, they are :
- FX lenses: Specially made for the expensive full-frame DSLR camera bodies as Nikon D810.

D- How to choose the right lens for your Entry-level DSLR camera:
Because there is a lot of focal length range, selecting the right first lens for your DSLR camera or second lens is a very hard task, so here is a simple step, that will help you in selecting the best lens for your needs:
- Write in a small paper the budget that you want to spend in this lens, it can be a range (ex: 100$ to 300$).
- Write the focal length that your old lens already covers, For example if you have the kit lens, this means you cover a focal length of 18mm till 55mm, so there is no need to buy a lens that contains this focal length again.
- Write the photography type that you want to do, ex portrait photography, or landscape or Macro photography or ...
- Now just See the tables below in this article, use the small paper that you already prepare, and found the best lens that meets these needs.

B- Best Nikon D3200 Prime lenses:
A prime lens has only one fixed focal length, that can never change like example the 35mm 1.8G lens, and here are some arguments about them:
I-Quality:
Prime lenses are known with their good quality compared to zoom lenses, so all photographers said that Prime lenses provide clear and precise sharp photos.
II-Price:

Tamron have a great cheap lenses, compare to Nikon, and they use some signs to show the type of the lens, as (AF mean Auto-focus and MF mean Manual-focus ) so just look for AF in the name of the Tamron lens; and here is a Tamron 24-70mm lens that work great with Nikon D3200.

Alternative, i really can't tell, because it is all about where you want to use it, what about buying an all in one lens as 18-200mm or 18-300mm? Or the kit lens 18-55mm + telephoto lens 55-200mm as that you will cover a very long range of focal length.
Also if you already own the kit lens 18-55mm, you should not buy again the lens 25-120mm, but going with 70-200mm is an better idea.

Hello, Good question, and buying a fisheye lens for Nikon is a very nice idea, so Nikon D3200 have no in built focus motor inside, and you need to buy a lens that has this motor; Sigma call this type of lenses (with in built motor) HSM, so if a Sigma Lens has an "HSM" in it name, and compatible with Nikon, this mean it will work great in any entry level DSLR camera as Nikon D3200, and it will autofocus.

Deletekit lens is a great photography lens, you can do a lot with it.
So if you want to try other kinds of photography as landscape or wildlife or sport photography, i suggest you to buy Nikon 55-200mm or Sigma 70-300mm because they are the best for that kinds of photography, then when you decide which kind of photography you will do all the time and want to become good at it, buy a prime lens, like example if you love portrait photography so much, buy a prime lens 35mm because you will have a better result with that lens.
no need to buy an all in one zoom lens (they mean lenses that begin from 18mm to ...mm) because you already have a kit lens that cover the focal length of 18-55mm, so you need to buy a long telephoto lens (they are lenses that begin from 55mm or more as 70mm or 85mm till ...mm).

(o) thanks for your Comment, so all Lenses listed here work great with all entry level DSLR cameras (Nikon D3200,D3300,D5200...), So if you check the links, you will see that Sigma and Tamron lenses have an auto focus system (built in motor = AF).
DeleteAbout the price, a telephoto lens is not expensive (Nikon 55-200mm cost 200$), so Sigma and Tamron should be under this price.

I was looking at that one but wasn't sure if the Nikon one was better. She does have the 18 - 55 mm kit but now the camera is playing up saying lens not attached when it clearly is. Any ideas what could be causing the problem, it's not a year old yet, cheers

About lens quality, Sigma made great lenses, they produce same image quality as Nikon, they are cheap because Sigma use more plastic in themes, while Nikon use Metal and .. but they use same glass so the quality is same.

DeleteYou have Two beautiful lenses that cover a very long focal length from 18mm to 200mm, so i see no need to buy an all in one zoom lens 18-300mm, because it sound like you repeat owning the same things.
With this two lenses that you have, you can try a lot of type of photography as Macro photography, Portrait Photography, wild life photography, sport photography... so i suggest you to use this two lenses, try all this type of photography, the one that you love more , let's say as example you Love "portrait photography" and you found lot of fun in doing it, here you need to buy a prime lens that is design for portrait photography 50mm, as that you will get great portrait photos, we can say same thing about other types of photography, so it is up to you and which type you want to be good at it.

Finally, Nikon 35mm lens is lovely, you can use it for everyday photography, i see it as an important equipment in your photography bag, so Go and get it, it will be a great add to your Lenses.

ReplyDeleteSure man (o), with pleasure, if you already own the kit lens 18-55mm, get 55-200mm or 55-300mm zoom lens, it will work great for all photography types that you list above, and if this two lenses looks expensive for you, go with Sigma 70-300mm.
ReplyDeleteWhile if you don't have any lens, buy an all in one zoom lens as 18-200mm or 18-300mm depend on your budgets.

Hello, there is no problem with 55-200mm as long as it have AF-S option, and i think that i list it in this article, the reason why i recommend sigma, is because it have low price compared to Nikon telephoto lenses.

Hello, as i mentioned in the article, Sigma used "HSM" for refer to auto focus lenses, so yes, Sigma AF 150-500mm f5-6.3 DG OS HSM compatible with Nikon D3200 and all other Nikon DX bodies.

DeleteYou are doing street photography, you need a quick prime lens, because you don't have much time for focus and zooming, So the best two option are 35mm and 50mm, 50mm 1.8 is more fast than 35mm.
about light, if it bother you, and make your photos lose their quality, you should use a lens hood (accessories).

So, you need a zoom lens, there are two options an all in one zoom lens "start from 18mm", and a telephoto zoom lens "start from 50mm or 70mm", so because you own the Kit lens 18-55mm, go with telephoto lenses for don't cover the 18-55mm twice.
So, All you need to do, is going to the "Best Nikon D3200 Telephoto lens" table above, and choose the lens that fits your need, most people go behind Sigma 70-300mm because it have low price and gives more focal length, But you can go with Nikon 55-200mm (it have big save on it now) you can buy it in price of a Sigma lens.
Also don't forget to read "Nikon D3200 Accessories" article, because i am sure you need a backpack, a second battery (more power), a large memory card (more storage), a tripod, and maybe a rain cover...

Great clarifying article Beno - thanks. I have the 18-55mm kit lens and bought the 55-300mm telephoto for distance/sports close-ups, but it's not strong enough for some sports photography taken from 200 to 300 meters away (rowing). I can't afford a super-telephoto and read that teleconverters are not advised over cropping down the picture. However, the picture needs to be in PERFECT focus to crop. What is your opinion on teleconverters or can you recommend an affordable quality lens in the 600mm range? Again, thanks.
ReplyDeleteHi John, sorry for taking a long time for answer you, I was a little busy; So if you need a very clarify sports photos from a long distance, you need to jump to 600mm, but before doing that you should upgrade your Nikon D3200 (entry level DSLR camera), because it won't let the lens give its best.
DeleteTeleconverters! I never use them and I will never use one, so my advice is to try to get close to your subject by sitting in the first chairs, or jump to 600mm (Sigma 600mm is a great long telephoto lens), BUT FIRST upgrade your DSLR to a full frame DSLR body.

DeleteA- With the 18-55mm starter lens, but do not expect amazing results.
B- Wide angle lens 10-24mm, quite expensive, great for full body and group photography.
C- 50mm Prime lens that i see it as a great addition to your photography bag, excelent preformence, you can use it for full body portrait, normal portrait, street photography and everyday photography.

Hi, I LOVE FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY (k); So you can do food photography using 2 kind of lenses, if not 3 which are (Telephoto lenses, Macro lenses, and Portrait lenses), i prefer the two first one, especially number two "Macro", because you get enormous of details and colors, which is the beauty of food photography.
Deletemacro: 100mm will do great.
telephoto i suggest Sigma 70-200mm or 300mm (you don't need 300mm, but it is useful for wildlife and sport photography).

Hi there, great blog and very helpful. I have the D3200 and the 18-55 and 55-200 kit lenses (not AF-S ones). I am travelling to South America and also Asia so am looking for a one-size fits all lens for both zooming in to take animal shots in the jungle and also mountains in the Himalayas. Thinking the 18-300 AF-S version is good to cover a greater range and avoid carrying multiple lenses? Thoughts??

ReplyDeleteHi, if you decide to go with portrait, so you should go with prime lenses as Nikon 35mm or 50mm, this are the best two lenses for portrait as we listed above, 35mm is little cheaper, but slow if we compare it to 50mm.
DeleteAbout bokeh effect, you should learn about how to do it from youtube or read my article that list "top 5 online course", because it is about skills not lenses.
